Joana Castro (2011-2012)

Joana joined my research group as a MSc in Biomedical Engineering, from Minho University. She defended her thesis on the 26th November 2012, on the topic “Isolation and characterization of vaginal microorganisms and its association with Bacterial Vaginosis” with a grade of 19 out of 20. She was co-supervised by Mariana Henriques.

Joana’s published a paper from her MSc work…

“Reciprocal interference between Lactobacillus spp. and Gardnerella vaginalis on initial adherence to epithelial cells.” demonstrates that some biofilm-associated urogenital pathogens can incorporate and enhance G. vaginalis mediated BV biofilms.
