Luís Melo (2010-2014)

Luís was one of the first PhD students that joined my group. He had a BSc in Biology (2008, Porto University) and a MSc in Biology (2009, Porto University). His thesis, entitled “Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteriophages: New insights on endolysins and phage-biofilm interactions” was co-supervised by Joana Azeredo, University of Minho, Portugal and Gabriele Bierbaum, IMMIP, Bonn University, Germany. Luís concluded his PhD in Biomedical Engineering on the 8th September 2014.

Luís’s latest paper…

“Characterization of Staphylococcus epidermidis phage vB_SepS_SEP9 – a unique member of the Siphoviridae family” described the isolation and characterization of a new bacteriophage with unique characteristics, that led to the proposal of the establishment of a new bacteriophage genus.
