Ana joined my research group as a research fellow hired in the scope of the project entitled “Characterization of the molecular interactions between Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilm infections and the host immune system”. A secondary goal of the project was to perform a small epidemiological study relating biofilm formation and antimicrobial resistance by clinical isolates of S. epidermidis. Ana accepted the challenge of pursuing a PhD in this field, co-supervised by Manuel Vilanova and Carlos Vasconcelos (MD), and after concluding her project related tasks, she further explore the molecular mechanisms involved in biofilm maturation using the clinical isolates previously characterized. I wish the best luck to Ana in her futures endeavours and thank her for her contributions to my research group and to the scientific field of S. epidermidis biofilms.
